Aunt H's Hair-do's

While we sit here and wait for Spence to show some signs of hair loss (only a few small pieces so far), my girls are excitedly taking advantage of Aunt Heather being in town, so they can sport the prettiest hair-dos in town.

She may be a tax attorney by training, but my girls are convinced that Heather's mission in life is "Niece Hair Dresser" and sincerely hope that she stays in the DC area for a long, long time!
A glimpse at their pre-church hair this past Sunday...

Thanks, Aunt H!

Spencer

He had his 5th spinal tap today.  He has another one scheduled on Monday.

The new anesthesia and anti-nausea medicine made him extra sleepy, as expected.

I went to our first parent support meeting tonight.  There was one other parent there who spoke only Vietnamese.  Everything the group leaders or I said had 2 minutes of translation to go through before we could go on.  We ended the session with some meditation involving visualizing a beam of divine light going through us and me almost falling asleep.  It'll take some convincing for me to go back.

I reviewed Spencer's original CBC (complete blood count) results today--the ones that sent him to the hospital in the first place-- and was shocked at how a good 3/4 of the elements they looked at were way outside the range of normal.   I can see why the pediatrician was alarmed.  (WBC=60.75, RBC=2.06, Hgb=7.4, Hct=21.3, Platelet=90)

  1. May I just say that I really, really, really want Heather to move here, so she can do my hair! I know your kids hair is long and beautiful and way more fun to do, but my hair needs more help and I repeat, I really, really, really, really want Heather here! Please find a job here Heather.

Has his CBC changed at all since his first round of chemo is over or is it still similar to his initial blood tests?

  2. Two more things: That is AnnaLisa's hair in the middle on the bottom picture, right?

Lastly, that support group sounds a little crazy. I'm guessing you are getting better support from church/school and the other parents in the hospital with their kids, right?

  3. The chemo keeps his blood counts constantly changing. Right now his WBC count is very low because of the chemo (one of the reasons he's so susceptible to infection). Whenever he gets a transfusion, it's because his red blood cells, hematocrit, or hemoglobin is low. He also regularly receives platelet transfusions as well, especially before his spinal taps.

  4. No, AnnaLisa is not in any of these pictures.

Yes, the hospital support group does not seem to be a good fit for me right now. We'll see.

  5. You need to put a name with the hair then, since I can not tell who they belong to. (o: I haven't seen your kids in a long time. )o: Emma is not looking as red-headed anymore.

  6. I love the hair. How fun for the girls. When I was a kid someone taught me how to french braid my own hair. Maybe she can teach the girls so she's not so worn out before church! It's so nice you have a sister (and Mom) here to help you and make some things fun for your kids.
