Just Talking about the Weather

On Dec. 10, temps were in the 20's and school had been canceled for 2 straight days because of  ice and snow.

This past weekend (December 21-22) the thermometer looked like this and I was within a hair of turning on the AC on Sunday night.

Yesterday and today, it was still really warm, but also quite rainy.  The dew points were in the 70's and the barometer ...

blah blah blah humidity blah blah blah

So why all this boring weather talk?

Because I needed a good lead-in to talk about our stupid elf on the shelf.   I don't know if it's the rain or the unseasonal warmth, but not only has our elf started going a little bonkers with his crazy antics of hanging from the entry way chandelier and flying through the air attached to the kids' ceiling fan...

but I think a couple people...no names mentioned (glenellieadamlaraemmacami)...are already looking forward to Delph's arrival again next year!

Heartbreak--Eight-year-old style

Yesterday was our church Christmas program  and it was amazing.  Our choir director is one part  passionate, one part hard-working, and the other part pure talent.  It's a great combination and it's been astounding to see how she has brought the ward choir to a whole new level in such a short period of time.  My favorite was the final performance of "Peace, Peace."  The choir and primary children had parts, then the congregation joined in with, "Silent Night."  It was pure loveliness.

The only hiccup of the day was during the Primary performance of "The Nativity Song," when Ellie had a seizure at the exact moment she was supposed to hold her sign of Baby Jesus up.  Her friends were all nudging her, but because of her seizure she didn't hold up her sign until the very end of her part.  She immediately realized what had happened and was completely heartbroken.  She held it together for the rest of the performance, but collapsed in a sobbing heap into my arms the second it was over.  The poor girl sobbed for 20-minutes straight, during which I shed more than a few sympathy tears as well.  She was completely convinced that her ill-timed seizure ruined the whole performance.  We tried to reassure her by letting her know that other kids held up their signs equally as late as her just due to inattentiveness, but she was still devastated.   In true Ellie form though, before long she washed her face, found some treats in my bag to share with her friends, and went back to class and hasn't said another word about it.

Man, I sure love this girl!

Christmas Lights and D'oh-nuts

We have an annual tradition each Christmastime to see some of the houses listed on the tacky Christmas light website, then to Krispy Kreme for some fresh hot doughnuts.  It's a fun tradition my family loves!

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugh-ly

The good...

Glen and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary on Wednesday!
As per usual we spent our anniversary date doing some Christmas shopping,
before heading to a favorite restaurant! I sure am grateful to have had Glen
by my side for the last 20 years!

The bad...

I put Cami on a plane to Utah this afternoon and we will not see her for another 2 weeks.  Although she is beyond excited about going on this service mission project in Mexico (with my aunt, uncle, and family), I am quite sad about her not being around this Christmas.

 The ugh - ly...

We got an Elf on the Shelf.
Okay, perhaps it's not actually ugly, but I have always had some inexplicable vendetta against the overpriced, trendy little elves. In the end, Ellie's enthusiasm and storytelling about her friends' elves made us decide that for the sake of our daughter's Christmas memories, we could swallow our elf-hating pride for a while.  "Delph the Shelf Elf" as the kids named him has only been here a day so far, but already he's winning his way into our hearts and I envision lots of fun adventures with the little dude.

The really ugly...

There is no picture of this monstrosity, but I went to a white elephant gift exchange on Tuesday night where the hot gift of the night was a LIVE RAT!!!  It was contained in one of those rodent balls, but it still gave me the heebie jeebies from across the room and the distinct notion that next year we will be instituting a no live animal rule.  Or at least a no rodent rule!

On a slightly different note...

The whole white elephant rat debacle reminded me when, as a freshman in college,  I was visiting my young cousins who lived not too far from campus.  I had lived across the country from them the whole time I was growing up, but was now visiting  them a few times a month to eat dinner, do laundry, etc.  One day they brought me to their basement and very excitedly introduced me to their new pet rats, one of which they had named Lara--named after me they made sure I knew.   All these years later and I still wonder whether to be complimented or insulted by that!

Multitasking My Way through Christmas

I'm writing this blogpost tonight while hoofing it on the treadmill.

I should find more devoted time to exercise...
and to blog for that matter,
but this is one of those times that I'm just glad to have a moment
to do either and so multi-tasking will have to suffice.

My Christmas shopping is probably 70% done,
which may not sound so horrible (or maybe it does) except
that I have no clue what I'm getting for two of my family members.

Amazon Prime has been my best friend through most of the process,
but some people <cough>GlenEmma<cough>
just didn't give me much to work with this year.

One of these days I might actually have to brave the mall.

In the meantime, I just spent this last weekend completely ignoring shopping
and working on these instead....

Any of you who knows me well, knows that Christmas cards
are one of my favorite parts of the whole Christmas season.

I love seeing all these smiling faces of friends, old and new, adorning our walls all month.
However I do miss the letters that seem to be going by the wayside
more and more these past few years.
Even the impersonal newsletters are seeming to be more of a rarity,
yet alone the handwritten notes that I treasure!

Speaking of cards and letters, ours this year are goofy, goofy, goofy.

I figure after last year's super serious card filled with news about
life-threatening illnesses and unemployment
that I would try for a little levity this year.

I'll publish it here in a week or two, but in the meantime
if your Christmas card collection is looking a little boring this year,
feel free to request your very own bit of silliness
delivered directly to your doorstep!
email me your address:  goolds@verizon.net

Alright, the kids are making fun of my 24 minute mile pace,
so I guess I'll sign off for now and amp things up to like 3mph
before I go make some brownies.

Selfies on the Bridge and Other Random Finds

Here are a few undiscovered photographic gems that I recently found when going through my photo organizer.  Before they get lost again, I'm putting them here on the blog so that they will be preserved forever  in our yearly blog book.  The first one is my favorite!

More Ice Pictures

Here are a few more of my favorite ice pictures from today.

I took my camera with me and was shooting pictures everywhere we went.  In the grocery store parking lot, at the church, after pulling over on the side of the road, etc.  We were enraptured by the beauty of the glistening icicles and although the temperatures hovered just above freezing all day, I was not disappointed that the ice took all day to melt off the branches.

Now they're predicting  3-6-inches of snow for tomorrow and school is already canceled....an announcement which was welcomed with much rejoicing at our house.

If the forecast actually pans out, it will be the first time in nearly three years that we've had more than 2-inches of snow.

Ultra-cool ice creations from the ice storm notwithstanding,  the kids are exceedingly excited about the potential of some decent sledding and snowman building.

That and another day to sleep in and you won't find anyone at our house complaining about the weather!

Ice and Cheese

Yesterday brought us about 3/4-inch of snow and an ice storm that ended church right after sacrament meeting yesterday and  has school canceled for today....

The power went out for several hours last night, which led us to double up everyone into the beds and pull out the sleeping bags and extra blankets, but it came on again around 3:00am, popped off and on again a few more times before coming back on for good.

We awoke this morning warm and cozy  and in awe of the icy winter wonderland around us....

The  streets, sidewalks, trees, bushes, deck, bird feeder, windchimes, and cars were all covered with beautiful a layer of glistening ice.
Now we are enjoying a laid back day at home with plans to include card making, baking, online Christmas shopping, movie watching, and of course playing outside in the snow and ice!
This ice leaf was our favorite find of the day.  We assume that it formed on top of a leaf and slid off into the snow.  In any case, it was absolutely gorgeous!

Spence on the other hand is in the middle of the same ice storm and his first ever college finals...
He comes home later this week, which meant that we needed to restock the groceries before his arrival...
That and a few crackers and I think we're about ready now.

What's in a Name?

 Plenty, it turns out!

Studies show that our names can play a part in the adults we grow to be.  I, for one, am not sure whether the actual name itself matters as much as the parents who choose the names and how they end up raising the kids, but it is fascinating to me nonetheless.  Although I was excited by the opportunity to name each of our children, I also felt a great responsibility to try to do it "right".  Right, of course, being different for each set of parents.  Some people value originality, some people value having an "in" name, and everyone, no matter their preferences, ends up balancing many factors of what sounds good, with what they like, and what fits with their family.

Sometime between Cami's and Emma's births, I feel like Glen and I experienced a shift in the kinds of names we preferred.  Even with that shift though, we realized that were a few factors that ended up being most important to us while we decided on their names.

Here are a few of the most important criteria that ended up playing the biggest role in the names we chose:

1we like the name--of course this was the most important factor of all, but  having said that, there were definitely some names we crossed off our lists because they didn't fit our other criteria.  For example I absolutely love the name Katelyn, but could never bring myself to even seriously consider it because there are so many different ways to spell it.

2. the name be classic--as in not off-the-wall or super trendy.  Even Emma's name which is very trendy right now, was popular 100+ years ago, which still makes it a classic in our book.

3 the name be easy to spell--with a hard-to-spell last name and both Glen and I having constantly misspelled first names, this is something we were very sensitive to and I still always cringe when I hear of someone purposely tweaking a name to make it have a funky spelling

4two or more syllables--si
nce we have a one syllable, short last name, we just thought it would sound better with a name with more than one syllable

5.  some family connection--Emma's and Ellie's names are the only first names with a family connection, but we wanted all of their middle names to be after family members

Our Names and Why They Were Chosen:

Spencer David--Not only did the name Spencer fit all of the above criteria, but we loved that he had a modern day prophet as a namesake.  His name was decided very early in my pregnancy with him and we never really seriously considered any other name.  His middle name, David, was after Glen's dad.

other names we considered
:  Benjamin

Camille "Cami" Rose--We liked the name Camille very early on in my pregnancy with her, but it wasn't until we decided to call her "Cami Rose" that we completely fell in love with the name.  We never even seriously considered any other names.  While we still love her name, Cami's is the only name where I feel like we dropped the ball on the easy-to-spell mantra that we had adopted.  While it seemed easy enough to us that Cami was just the first four letters of Camille, she gets her name misspelled a lot.   Her middle name, Rose, is after my mother Rosanna.

other names we considered:  Savannah--this was never really a strong consideration, just the one that stuck around the longest besides Camille

Emma Kristine--  This name took a little longer to decide than the first two, but we still settled into it well before she was born.  We have an ancestor on Glen's side of the family called Emma Zina Player, which is how we first started thinking of the name.  At the time her name was about #17 on the popularity lists, so it didn't seem overly common.  In the next couple of years after she was born was when it skyrocketed in popularity.  Now that it's been in the top 5 on the popularity lists for over a decade, there are definitely a lot of Emmas around, however she's never had another one in any of her classes.  Her middle name, Kristine, is after my sister Kristina.

other names we considered: Amanda, Rebecca--we couldn't decide whether to spell Rebekah the biblical way or Rebecca the more traditional way and in the end decided that if we couldn't decide, then it probably would get butchered a lot by others.  We still love that name.

Adam Stephen--This is one that took us a bit longer to decide on than the older kids' names, but once again we had settled on it a couple of months before he was born.   We love his name and think that out of everyone's, that his is probably the one that best fit all of our criteria.   Everyone knows the name, knows how to spell it, but it's not super common (usually in the 60's on the popularity lists).  His middle name, Stephen, is after my dad.

other names we considered
:  Nathan, Isaac--Nathan was one of the few names that we didn't use that ever went forward on our list and was the top choice if Ellie had been a boy.

Eliza "Ellie" Sandra --this was by far our hardest name to choose.  She was the only one of our kids where we had no idea what her name would be until after she was born and she was very nearly Abigail Anne instead!   In the end, we love our name choice and love that Eliza is a beautifully classic name, which isn't too common and that Ellie is an equally lovely nickname that suits Ellie's personality just perfectly.  I also like that we have an ancestor, Eliza Ann Perkins, on my side of the family that makes her name all the more meaningful.  Her middle name, Sandra, is after Glen's mom.

other names we considered
:  Abigail--this was Glen's favorite.  I like Abby as a nickname, but didn't love Abigail as the full name.  After Ellie was born, we finally decided to go with my choice, but Glen has often commented on how well Ellie's name suits her and how he has no regrets about our choice.

Lara Anne--It used to bother me that my name was mispronounced and misspelled, even by my good friends, but now I like that it's different, yet simple.    Everyone thinks that my parents just decided to spell Laura without the "u", but I am proud to say that Lara has it's own derivation and meaning unrelated to Laura.  My dad was studying Russian when I was born and both girls' names they were considering were Russian names.  I am glad they chose the one they did.

other names my parents considered:  Larissa and Eric (if I was a boy)

Glen Edward--Glen's parents had a very strict criteria for her kids' names that they had to have only four letters.  I'm not sure how this stipulation began, but all five of his siblings and him have four letter names (Alex, Kurt, Ryan, Eric, Lara).   Since Glen's mom is very musical, she decided to name Glen after the famous pianist, Glenn Gould

other names Glen's parents considered:  Seth

Movember 2013 Highlights

November 2013 brought us:

3 trips to Harrisonburg--once to visit Spencer on Veteran's Day, once to pick him up for Thanksgiving, and another to bring him back home after Thanksgiving.  I'm thinking that next time I might let the car make the 120-mile trek by itself now!

A trip to beautiful Meadowlark Gardens:

Overdue birthday crepes for Emma and Adam (and a little glimpse of our kitchen before the fridge was installed):

Some fun homeschool experiments about icebergs

A third place finish for Adam in the 3K Pumpkin Pie Run:

a photo finish for Ellie and Daddy....

pumpkin pie for all...

And of course what would November (or "Movember" as some like to call it) be without some good old fashioned  facial hair?!!?!
