Normal Summer = Busy

When doctors told us that medically speaking Spencer was in a gray zone and left the decision to us about whether to proceed with a bone marrow transplant, we felt the weight of the world on our shoulders.  Deciding where to go on vacation is hard enough for us and making a  life-and-death decision about our son seemed a little overwhelming to say the least.  We prayed, fasted (along with our ward and family), and researched our hearts out while we struggled with the decision and found strong pros and cons with either choice.  Eventually, we felt peace and knew that we should not proceed with the transplant.

Once we made the decision, we quickly noticed a big perk to finishing his treatment after the 4th round of chemo instead of spending months and months in isolation recovering from a transplant.... Spence would be able to experience a normal summer--his last summer of being a high school student.

And, boy, after spending 5-months cooped up in the hospital, has he been making up for lost time!  I had forgotten how extremely busy a normal summer is for teenagers!

He's spent 10-days in Florida, countless hours with friends around town, and 4-days at Youth Conference.  Then a mere 36-hours after arriving home from the youth conference in Palmyra* (the youth conference* that Glen and I had originally been in charge of planning before Spencer got sick)....

Spencer and Cami packed their bags again, to head down for a week at EFY* (Especially for Youth) at  Southern Virginia University.
Since SVU is a good 180-miles from our house, we worked out some carpooling so that no one would have to drive both ways (unless you're like me last year when I drove there and back twice in one day).   I thought it would be fun to meet their roommates and help them get settled in, so I volunteered to drive them there on Monday morning.   The driving was clear sailing and they passed the time by watching "Tangled" with Ellie, who had come along to keep me company on the way home.
By the time we got there, Ellie was best friends with all the girls and would've gladly stayed there at EFY with them if I'd let her.
After meeting their roommates and making sure that Spener actually put the sheets on his bed, Ellie and I bid our farewells for the week and set off on our own wild adventure.

To be continued....

A little note about some of my "Mormon talk" that may not be understandable to my non-LDS readers:

*Palmyra, NY is located in the Finger Lake region of upstate New York and is the location of many early church historical sites, including the Sacred Grove where Joseph Smith knelt and prayed after asking God which church he should  join and the hill where the Book of Mormon had been buried.  Each July a grand play is held there in Palmyra, where over 700 performers reenact scenes from Book of Mormon.

* The Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ and tells of Christ's visit to the American continent to teach the people there what He'd taught His followers in Jerusalem.  It is an amazing book that has changed my life.

* Youth conference is an annual gathering of the youth in our immediate area (about 200 youth), where they have spiritually uplifting experiences, perform service, and have fun with a wider range of LDS youth than they would normally come into contact with.   (click here  to see last year's report on youth conference)

EFY is a camp held at a university in Southern Virginia, where people come from all over the Eastern United States to participate in similar activities as they did at Youth Conference, but on a grander scale.  They went last year and loved it!

Playing Games...

Over the years, each of these games has provided hours of fun and entertainment for our family  (click on the pictures to see them on Amazon):

We've enjoyed many other games as well, but these are the ones that have been the most inclusive of the whole family.

So when Glen bought this game for Emma's recent birthday, I wasn't so sure she would like it very much.  I remembered playing as a kid, but didn't really recall enjoying it all that much.

The day we pulled it out to play it for the first time, had been a very grumpy day and I'm not sure anyone harbored high hopes for it....

but it didn't take too long of playing...

before everyone was giggling, joking, and in general enjoying themselves immensely....

It was a hit all the way around....Mom, Dad, Spencer, Cami (who set a new world record for negative points), Emma, Adam, and even Ellie thoroughly enjoyed it!

My pictures don't really capture the fun and joy we felt while we played, which feelings were amplified and appreciated all the more after the negativity of earlier in the day, but Pit will forevermore have a place in my heart as a fun smile-maker for the whole family!
Pit rocks!

Scummy

The main reason for our recent trip to Palmyra was so that we could scout out the area for next year's youth conference (since Glen and I were recently called as the stake youth conference directors).    During youth conference, we will be staying in a church owned camp called Seneca Lake Camp, which features several rustic cabins, a mess hall, and lots of lots of land to run around on.    Additionally there is this beautiful guest house, which is where decided to stay while we were there as a family.

The home is situated on a gorgeous plot of land in rural upstate NY overlooking one of the Finger Lakes and since it's meant to sleep up to 20 people, it was also significantly larger than our actual home.  It has a HUGE kitchen that had me bordering on covetousness and my kids were thrilled not to be three to a room like they are here at home.

So I was really enjoying our spacious, clutter-free surroundings for the three days we were there, until one of my kids had the gall to say....

"Mom, look how shiny the sinks are here.  I like it when they don't have those white soap spots in them."

So after sending the kids on a scummy sink scrubbing spree when we got home, I decided that  it's time to admit that those 5 housekeepers I hired, er, um, gave birth to, don't seem to be doing their jobs too well.  I'm sure it has nothing to do with the quality of their training, since everyone knows their mother is a housecleaning Nazi.

Or was that a  Housecleaning Not-See, wherein if you're tired/busy enough you simply Not-See the clutter?

Ready to Roll.

After a long day cooped up in the car on Saturday,  a restless Saturday night, and a grumpy Sunday, we were thrilled to wake up on Monday to an unseasonably gorgeous day and a yummy breakfast cooked by Cami.

The sunshine and good food gave us some good positive energy, and we were ready to roll....

literally....

in fact, with a hill like this, the urge to roll or run down it proved to be completely irrepressible for certain members of our family...

like everyone aged below 30...
At first I wasn't too happy about all the rolling and running considering the fact that the hill we were on was Hill Cumorah....

but seeing as there were no signs forbidding it, or fences to prevent it, combined with all of the kids' happy smiles after their bad-mood-Sunday....

I decided to soak up the kids' smiles and go with the fabulous picture taking opportunity....
and somehow when they declared Hill Cumorah their new favorite place to visit, I just couldn't mind that much.

And I'm throwing in this last picture, because this statue at the Hill Cumorah visitors' center is one of my favorite depictions of Jesus Christ.  I love that He has a subtle smile on His face, emanating the gentleness I envision Him having and I love the painting of the Sacred Grove in the background.  The familiarity of the wooded background scene seems to give an air of approachability that really connected with me.  Beautiful!
