"Mom. I really want to sign up for football this year."
Uggggh!! Football!? No way! We've done basketball, tee ball, soccer, gymnastics, ice skating, etc...but football?! A sport where injuries are expected, where coaches swear liberally, with practice EVERY single weekday! I want nothing to do with it.
But he was really excited to try it out, so despite my plethora of misgivings we went ahead signing him up and hoped for the best.
I was not encouraged when first thing at registration, they informed us that Spencer has 8 lbs. to lose to qualify for his weight division . Since he was half way between two weight classes, we had rounded him down to the lower class naively thinking it would be better for his health and safety....little did we know that the weight classes are much more than a loose guideline. It is serious stuff.
So our 13-year-old boy with his ribs poking through went on a crash diet to lose eight pounds!
Then, after all of two days of practice he came home looking like this!
And guess what? He loves it. He comes home dripping sweat and completely exhausted, but totally enjoying himself.
I may not be ready for the life of a football mom...but ready or not it's here!

Did Glen play football when he was younger? Is he excited for Spencer? you are such a good supportive mom! I don't know if I could be as brave as you!
You rock Spence!!
Don't worry mom, he will survive and it will make him even tougher.
Please keep us up to date on how he does in his games.
Love, grandpa-grandma football fans
Are you sure that this was not done by a giant gorilla?
Mama: Have they caught that giant gorilla what did this to you?
Bobby Bouche (I mean Spencer): No, mama. The, the search continues.
Oh Lara!!! I feel you pain. Our boys would be best friends if you lived near here!! But as for now he is grounded from your blog!! No ideas- I am barely able to let him leave this morning for Junior High!!
