I had just started getting used to the fact that lately whenever I try to take a picture of Adam that I usually get some goofy smile like this...

or maybe even this...

but now this is what I've got for his kindergarten picture too?

His comment on the subject,
"They didn't tell me I had to do a real smile." So, now do I send him for retakes? Or preserve the perplexed birthday boy look for future generations?

Both I think.
For sure, preserve. That is priceless and will look amazing in his wedding video someday. Besides you can always do the $7 package at Target and be more fussy about how it looks.
I pretty much bank on school pictures coming out crummy, but that is FUNNY and SOOO cute! Keep it, for sure. The safety-pinned birthday ribbon is the best!
Keep it for sure! Back in the old days-retakes were not so common and I have a bunch of goofy grade school pix-since I as often as not did not know (or remember) that it was picture day and show up with my hair uncombed, etc.
I was not anywhere near as photogenic as sweet little Adam.
Hey Adam, you are a cutie!
Love, Grandpa-Grandma
Definitely preserve it!
