My Poor Snow Starved Children

While my own childhood memories of winter involve waist high crunchy snow that didn't melt until April, my own kids think of snow as a rare treat that needs to be pounced upon. Usually we get at least a couple of good snowstorms here in DC area every year to satiate their appetite, although it generally melts completely within a day or two of falling. Good snowstorm means that there's enough snow to cancel school, build a dwarf size snowman, and allow a couple of sleds down our hill before it melts.

Today I realized that it's been a while since we've had a good snowstorm and that my kids are completely snow-starved.

How deprived are they?

Let's just say that when we got this light dusting today...
my kids went crazy, bonkers frolicking...
in the five minute flurry that was over by the time they got on all their winter gear. Not that I'm complaining at the five minute distraction on a day off from school, but I was disappointed for them that there wasn't any more to it.

So when was the last time it REALLY snowed here?

In February it will have been two whole years!
This big one-incher in February 2007 brought us to the favorite local sledding hill for more excitement than our front yard has to offer. No one seemed to mind that the leaves and grassy spots kept slowing them down, they were just so excited to be on their sleds.

A week later that same February was the last BIG snowstorm we've seen. It came just before Matt & Karey's wedding (hence Emma's fancy dress) and wreaked havoc on everyone's flights and travel plans. Lucky for us they were getting married in the DC temple, so we got to sit back and enjoy it while everyone else had to wait for hours on end at the airport!

I may retract this statement later, but we're ready for some real snow! Just a couple of inches would be fine, but I want my poor snow neglected kids to remember how fun winter can really be!

(look how little they were three years ago [Wait! Did Adam wear the same coat when he was three as he does now at age six? Yeah, I guess so.])

Sometimes I read your blog and think if she lived near me we would have so much in common! And then other times I wonder what that girl is thinking!!!!:)

We get huge snowstorms all the time but they never cancel school (not once in the 5 years we've lived in Utah) because snow is no big deal around here. Hope you get a good storm this winter!

I guess you can take the girl out of Minnesota, but you can't take Minnesota out of the girl! :-)

Poor deprived babies! Time to send them all out to visit Grandpa and Grandma for a winter break. They can build 12' tall snowmen and sled down long snowy-icy hills across the street.

And then we will feed them hot chocolate and other goodies in order to spoil them like the good grandparents that we are.

Love, Grandpa-Grandma

The kids look so cute. It's amazing what a few years does. They look so little in that last picture!

Speaking for myself, I've had my fill of snow this year! I'm ready for those mild Virginia winters again. Michigan is COLD!
