TRUE!   Glen's was on the blessings of the temple, Emma's was on journal writing, and mine was on the blessings of family history.   

 2.  Ellie was also asked to give a talk in primary.
TRUE!   I did request hers to be postponed for another week though.   Three talks at once was definitely enough for us.

3.  I pretended to catch a Pikachu (pokemon) in the middle of my talk.
TRUE!   I did it as an attention getter and definitely took people off guard with it.  I also quoted Siri.    I think a few people probably think I'm weird now, but on the bright side,  every 10-year-old boy in the room was paying very close attention to my talk and I did get this email, so there's that too.  

4.  I've lost about 10-lbs in the last couple of months by cutting down on foods with high fat (cheese, butter, nuts, red meats, etc)
TRUE!   I've been having issues digesting fat lately, so I've cut it way down and have lost weight in the process.  I think it's going to end up being a long-term dietary change for me.  

5.  I sit glued to the computer every Friday afternoon waiting for Cami's P-day emails to come through. 
TRUE!   I'm rather obsessed.

6.  A bunch of girls from our ward/stake accidentally ran into Cami at the Provo temple yesterday.
TRUE!  Apparently they were trying to meet another missionary from the stake and happen to run into Cami too.   I haven't heard Cami's reaction yet (since it's not her P-day), but I imagine she was excited to see them.  

7.  Emma leaves for her study abroad in England in ONE WEEK!!!!
TRUE!   I can't believe that we'll be down TWO kids for the semester.   It's going to be lonely around here.   She is so excited though!

The Lie

Since I know you've all been waiting on pins and needles to find out which was the lie in my last blogpost, I've decided to keep my sleepy eyes open just long enough to write this blogpost.   "Book Thief" is on while I write and Glen is already starting to snooze.  We bring Cami to the airport at 4:00am tomorrow, where she will fly to California to stay with my sister for the new few weeks.  She is very excited about going, but I am already sad about not having her around much this summer!  

Here are the answers....


1. Spencer has chiggers.
True.  He's been working full-time as a laborer at an apartment complex this summer and spends his days doing all sorts of odd jobs, mostly all outdoors.  While clearing a field the other day,  apparently he came into contact with chiggers.  Both of his legs around his sock line are bright red and very itchy.    It reminded me of the chigger outbreak we had at girls' camp one year when I was a youth.  I didn't get any bites, but I remember vividly half the camp painting their legs with nail polish in an effort to relieve the itching.  

2. Ellie got stung by a bee over 10 days ago and still has a large bruise from it.
True.  Apparently she is moderately allergic to bee stings.   She stepped on a bee one day while running in the yard barefoot and experienced 2-3 days of pretty significant swelling, then a large bruise that's lasted nearly two weeks.

3. It's almost 11:00pm and Cami is in the kitchen roasting entire bulbs of garlic.
True.  She randomly got the urge to make homemade bagels and garlic butter the other night.  She stayed up until who knows when to make them, but they were worth every second of her efforts.  They were amazing.

4. Emma got third place in the freestyle at tonight's swim meet.
True.  She's been swimming back and fly in the "A" meets this season and has placed in both of those as well.  She missed swimming the freestyle though and tried it out at this week's B meet.  

5. I have had the need to issue a lot of apologies lately.
Unfortunately, true.  I'm not intentionally acting like a heel, but apparently I am.  I have had to issue more apologies in the last week than I normally do in an entire year.   I apologize now if I've offended you too.  I'm sorry.  

6. Adam is the child having the hardest time adjusting to the new summer schedule.
True, true, true.   He's normally so even keeled, but I think this whole new summer schedule (or lack thereof) is taking a toll on him.  He is grumpy as can be!  

7. Emma spent all day Saturday at the beach with the Beehives from church.
True.  My second counselor in YW is awesome and took 8 of the 13 Beehives to Virginia Beach on Saturday in a ward member's 15-passenger van.  She came back a little red, but oh so happy to have spent the day with friends!   

8. Glen and I are not eating sugar during the week.
True....mostly.  I'm not quite perfect at it yet, but I'm trying and we've definitely made significant improvements at healthier eating.   I'm also working really hard to get at least 1/2 hour of exercise per day.  

9. I ran out on Sunday morning before our 9:00am church to get the right kind of leaves for our caterpillars who had eaten all  the other leaves overnight.
True.  Don't even ask how I, who hales from an extremely animal averse family, has allowed myself to become so sucked into having a mini farm at our house.  With chicks in the bathtub, a dog, a praying mantis egg case waiting to hatch, and 6 very hungry luna caterpillars who only eat one kind of leaf...I definitely may qualify as a little loco.  

10. I am working on a huge project right now and my house is thrashed.
False.  But it was a trick question!  I am not working on one huge project, I am working on MANY! With YW camp around the corner, homeschool looming in the fall, trying to finally finish decorating (and buy furniture) for our living room, and one more YW project I'm working on...it's like my life is one series of fires after another that need to be put out.   Oh, and my house is nearly always thrashed, so that part is true.  

11. My boys recently got airsoft guns and all of my kids are enjoying the new hobby.
True.  A couple of Adam's friends like to play with airsoft guns, so he decided he wanted to buy one for himself.  Glen also picked out ones for him and Spencer to use, but now I'm wondering if we shouldn't have gotten a couple more too, since Ellie and Emma are suddenly interested in doing it too!  It's actually quite hilarious to see Ellie all decked out in her fancy skirt and sparkly shoes racing around the yard with her mask and gun. 

12.  I just sent in my official notice that I'm homeschooling Emma, Adam, and Ellie next school year!
True.  As crazy as I feel committing myself to such a big thing for another year, I absolutely know it's the right thing for us!

True.  I was a bit disappointed with how the photos turned out, but baby Cora was so sweet and adorable, it was an absolutely delightful hour we spent taking those photos!

True!  These little chicks are about as doted-on as an animal can be. They are constantly being cuddled and of late can even be occasionally  found as residents in Ellie's dollhouse!

Super Hard Quiz Answers

a.  Cami's male orchestra conductor shrieked like a girl during one of the performances tonight. 
Yep, really happened.  I searched and searched for a video that someone might have posted of it online, but couldn't find anything other than this one--same song, different group performing.  Their school's version had the random screams through it like this video, then at the end the orchestra conductor turned toward the audience and shrieked.  It was great comedic effect. 



b.  When I brought rolls to a function recently,  mine were so ugly that they held them back for last, hoping not to have to serve them.Yep.  For as long as I've been cooking and blogging, most of my food is still ugly and average tasting.  Someday I hope to be as cool as my sisters-in-law (Karey and Mika) who I am confident could transform a pile of pickled liver into a beautiful feast worthy of being on the cover of Better Homes and Garden,  but in the meantime I'll be that friend.  You know the one who you think should be really good at cooking (or whatever), but in reality is barely holding her brain (and kitchen) together with a little melted chocolate. 

c.  One of my children requested to be homeschooled today, then changed his mind when he found out I'd likely assign him lots of book reports.Yep.  The homework battles have subsided slightly over the last few weeks, but the monthly book reports may very well do us both in. 

d.  Had two kids in meltdown mode at the same time today.Yep.  One meltdown was book report related (see above) and the other seems to be medication related.

Answers to the Super Hard Quiz

Which one of the following statements are NOT true about my last week?

a)  I wrote over 85 emails in 4 days' time coordinating a PTA sponsored event.  Totally true.  The event went off without a hitch and made oodles of money for the PTA.  

b)  I picked a friend's front door lock with a credit card in under 60 seconds.  I was picking up Cami from her regular babysitting job  and somehow in the transition  between one babysitter to the next they locked themselves out of the house with all the kids.  I felt really badly making the mom come all the way from work to let them in, so I gave the old credit card trick a try.  I was surprised at how easily it worked and I now have new motivation to keep my deadbolt locked.

c)  I spent 3-1/2 hours on a school bus for a 45 minute field trip at a farm. Unfortunately true.  Don't ask me why they picked a farm in the middle of boondock Virginia for a kindergarten field trip, but after the back cramping bus ride on swervy narrow roads and an entire 45 minutes on the farm, I was as grumpy as all the kids who weren't allowed to eat until we returned to school at 2:00.   On the upside, the drive was absolutely gorgeous.  Someday I want to take the family back to Waterford to actually have time to enjoy it. 

d)  I picked Ellie up early from school twice this week, because she was so tired.  True.  Once after the torturous field trip mentioned in (c) and again the next day when I walked by her classroom and found her in the class by herself with the teaching assistant taking a nap while the rest of the class was at recess.   I was a little sad that the teacher hadn't called me, but was glad that serendipity allowed me to rescue her from an exhausting afternoon at school. 

e)  I was yelled at by the lunch lady at school twice in the same day.  Yes, apparently the lunch lady was a little hormonal that day or something, because she yelled (actually raised her voice and treated me like a first grader) for minuscule provocations.  
Okay, okay.  I wasn't going to say, but if you must know...she yelled at me for wanting to place a bin in the lunchroom to collect the kids' milk cartons for an activity and then later yelled at me for taking 3 disposable plastic spoons to help scoop out frosting for the same activity.  She actually screamed, "Don't you ever come back in here again,"  when I took the spoons.  Good thing I was in a hurry and definitely non-hormonal or she would have heard an earful.  It was her lucky day.   

f)  I was finally officially nominated into the "Bad Mom Hall of Fame" when I hosted Adam's birthday party with little to no planning and several unsent invitations.    You knew this had to be the one that wasn't totally true.  While it's a fact that Adam's party was ill planned  (picking the party day to be the day after the large PTA event that I was coordinating was my first problem). Everyone here should already know that I was nominated into the "Bad Mom Hall of Fame"  a good 15-1/2  years ago when we took a three-week-old Spencer to an Orioles' game and sat down right behind the dugout.   Every time a ball came within 20 feet of us, people dove, not to try to catch the balls, but to protect Spencer from getting nailed in the head by a line drive.  I've been renominated entry into the hall of ill repute approximately 7322 times since that fateful day in 1995.

g)  I took care of my family's Halloween costumes in a quick stop at a friend's house and a 30 minute trip to the consignment store.  I consider this feat my tender mercy of the week.  I was so overwhelmed and distracted by the PTA event, that I hadn't given their costumes a second thought, although they were supposed to wear their costumes to the event that night.  I had less than an hour between setting up sessions at the school and raced off to the big consignment store nearby.  I was completely amazed at how quickly I found perfect costumes in Emma's, Adam's,  and Glen's sizes. Ellie's cute little witch costume was purchased from a friend who runs a tutu business.  Shockingly, despite the haste with which they were chosen, the kids and Glen were all completely thrilled with their costumes.  (Pictures coming later this week).

f)  I was finally officially nominated into the "Bad Mom Hall of Fame" when I hosted Adam's birthday party with little to no planning and several unsent invitations.
g)  I took care of my family's Halloween costumes in a quick stop at a friend's house and a 30 minute trip to the consignment store.

Are you a gazillion dollars richer tonight?

In answer to the Super Hard Quiz from yesterday....   

1.  I've had 20+ hours of sleep over the last two days.  Yes, it's true.  My germ du jour laid me down flat, but alas reality has struck hard the last 24 hours and I'll be lucky if I get that much sleep total the rest of the week.

    2.  I've been commissioned to make Valentine's treats that are nut, milk, egg, gluten, and gelatin free.  Yep, but it'll be the last time I ever do that.    I made Corn Chex marshmallow treats that were everything, but gelatin free then brought gelatin kid a cookie.  Turns out the kid who's allergic to nuts, milk, and eggs doesn't even like sugar, so there's really no point in catering to his allergies anymore. 

    3.  A plane crashed 100 feet from my brother's house this morning.  100% true.  My brother Nate lives in East Palo Alto, California and was getting ready to walk out the door to work when there was a huge explosion and fireball where a small plane crashed into several neighboring houses.  His roommates took many of the pictures you see in online news reports.  Read more about it here and here and here.  It really is quite a miracle that no one on the ground was seriously injured.

   4.  I've read three of the five Percy Jackson books since Sunday.  Yep, and I impressed a whole bunch of third graders today with my superior Percy knowledge.  Turns out I can be cool in certain social circles. 

Two of the five people on earth who think I'm kind of cool now. 

   5.  I've been on a sugar-free diet for three weeks now. Can't believe I'm saying this, but this is also true.  I realized that I was addicted to sugar much like others would be addicted to tobacco and I decided it was time to go cold turkey.  It hasn't been easy, but it's interesting how much more level-headed I've felt since beginning.  I think I've finally deluded talked Glen into joining me too, which will definitely make my trek much easier.  Now if I can just get Cami to join the quest too....

   6.  It's 9:30 and all my kids are in bed.  A couple of them hadn't been in bed very long, but somehow they were officially all in bed by 9:30.   Of course, it was a short lived triumph as it is now 10:30 the next night and I've still got one up...

Okay, this picture is totally off topic, but here's a little glimpse at my idea of humor when I stay up too late working on the church programs.   It came off about as well as most of my late night blogposts (aka bombposts), but, on the bright side, I did feel like quite the comedian for 10 minutes or so while I searched for a scripture about "snow" on lds.org. 

   7.  I've listened to "Defying Gravity" from the Wicked soundtrack 6 times in the last hour    It should've been obvious to everyone, but I think I tricked you all.  While I love listening to "Defying Gravity" (Glee version) and play it loudly several times a day, six times in one hour would indicate that I had control over the playlist for an entire hour, which we all know could not be true with an Ear Smitten Teenager in the house.

Never mind that the guy sounds like a girl (or the one sour note at the end which is not in the itunes version), I really, really like this song.

 

 No one guessed correctly, so I'll keep Spencer and Cami's gazillion dollars to myself.
